2026 Lexus RZ EV: Initial Preview Showcases Extended Range and a High-Performance F-Sport Trim

by HuangTao 19 May 2025

The Lexus RZ, the brand’s inaugural fully electric offering, is set to receive a mid-cycle refresh for the 2026 model year, featuring an expanded battery capacity, updated electronic systems, and the introduction of a premium F Sport variant. Initially introduced in 2023 with exclusive all-wheel drive configurations, the model expanded to include a front-wheel drive option for extended range. These enhancements debut first in Europe, with North American availability anticipated by late 2025.

Highlighting the updates, the F Sport trim now integrates Lexus’s Direct4 dual-motor all-wheel drive technology, producing 402 horsepower. A novel feature allows drivers to engage simulated gear changes via steering-wheel paddles, replicating the experience of an eight-speed automatic transmission. This system dynamically adjusts torque and power output based on manual inputs, creating a sensation akin to shifting gears in a conventional internal combustion vehicle.

The term "steering wheel" here refers specifically to Lexus's innovative electronic steering system, which features a distinctive handle-like design rather than a conventional wheel—currently offered in Europe, though its U.S. market release is pending (the model shown here retains a classic wheel). The RZ F Sport trim adds lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels and a two-tone exterior combining black with a choice of colors, including a newly introduced metallic grey finish. Base variants, meanwhile, can optionally upgrade to 20-inch wheels but default to standard 18-inch versions.

The entire RZ lineup benefits from a suite of enhancements beyond the new F Sport trim. A redesigned 77-kWh battery pack featuring updated chemical composition boosts efficiency and driving range, paired with a reengineered Lexus e-axle system for improved energy use. The introduction of water cooling for both battery and motor thermal management further optimizes performance. Lexus states these upgrades add up to 100 km (over 60 miles) of additional range compared to the current RZ models, addressing the U.S. variant’s prior ceiling of 266 miles (and a subpar 196 miles in certain setups).

Three configurations are now offered: the front-wheel-drive RZ350e with 221 hp, the 380-hp RZ450e, and the new 402-hp RZ550e F Sport. Acceleration times vary sharply—the RZ350e reaches 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, the RZ450e in 4.9 seconds, and the F Sport slashes that to 4.1 seconds. The base RZ350e and RZ450e use a 74.7-kWh battery, while the F Sport upgrades to the 77-kWh unit.

Range estimates differ by model: the single-motor RZ350e achieves up to 300 miles, the dual-motor RZ450e drops to 260 miles, and the high-performance RZ550e F Sport manages a modest 225 miles, reflecting its power-focused design.

The refreshed RZ’s all-wheel-drive variants now boast twice the towing capacity of their predecessors, reaching over 3,300 pounds. A newly integrated 11 kW AC onboard charger enhances charging speeds on Level 2 systems, while an upgraded battery temperature management system optimizes charging efficiency—particularly in extreme climates like frigid winters. Engineers have also introduced targeted measures to reduce cabin vibrations and curb NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), supplemented by extra sound insulation beneath the rear seats and within the tonneau cover. Notably, the 2026 RZ incorporates a Tesla-style North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for streamlined compatibility.

While the updated RZ debuts first in Europe, its U.S. arrival is slated for late 2025, though timing remains subject to evolving U.S. import tariff policies, as the vehicle is currently manufactured in Japan.
